They’re just intrinsically creepy.) We’ve also had fairly few perspectives in the series from someone with a regular civilian “day job” as such, so that was a nice change being a businesswoman lets her approach difficulties in completely different ways from our more military viewpoint characters. (Not that I dislike the Dysians as people! They seem quite decent, within the constraints of what they feel they have to do. She’s come a long way, from regarding other human cultures as backwards and barbaric, to being able to negotiate with a species that I, at least, regard as downright nightmarish and nauseating. Her reflections, and Vstim’s, on the value of a merchant and what the job means - not ripping people off, but recognizing ways to connect people with complementary needs - were very thoughtful, and it was great to see that play into how she negotiated with the Sleepless. That was worthwhile, though, because it let us see how she’s grown as a person, now, and what she’s learned. Her earlier chapters in the Interludes of the books were frustrating because she was in the most fascinating places and situations, and it was great to see them, but she was acting and thinking like a narrow-minded judgemental brat. It was entertaining to see the narrative directly address the question of “How’s Lopen supposed to swear the Third Ideal?! He doesn’t hate anyone!” since the question occurred to me early on in the story. Brandon said (in the Reddit discussion of the chapter) that the Third Oath of the Windrunners is more broadly about “I’ll get rid of my caveats about those I’ll protect” - which, from the Lopen’s, I extrapolate to it being able to be about either who you’ll protect or how you’ll protect, with his being the latter. His joking genuinely is good and positive for many people - Rysn liked it and preferred it greatly to the way other people tiptoed around her - but anything can go overboard and it’s good for him to be more aware of how other people are taking his jokes. Nonetheless, his personality shone through and was great fun, and he even got some character development. Next point: I did love getting The Lopen’s viewpoints (as I expected to), though I thing Brandon went a little overboard in how frequently he inserted the character’s verbal tics into his internal narration.
